Each fall since September 27, 2020, Local X Change has temporarily transformed the traffic island on Oakland Avenue (across from the IUP Oak Grove) in Indiana, PA into a Traffic Island Oasis.
As the coronavirus pandemic disrupted society, we decided to create an island experience so that residents of Indiana, Pennsylvania could self-isolate in a new location: a traffic island transformed into a Traffic Island Oasis.
We built a palm tree and a ground plane that mimics sand, and invited the IUP 3D Design and Digital Fabrication students to create items for the island. These objects were installed on the island in a public event on Sunday, September 27, 2020, Sunday, May 2, 2021, Sunday, September 26, 2021, Sunday, September 25, 2022, and Sunday, September 17, 2023
